Former Rangers striker Andy Little has suggested that there are a handful of players within Pedro Caixinha’s current squad that he could build the team around, and insisted that Barrie McKay should be the main candidate to become the Gers’ new talisman, the Evening Times reports.
McKay has recently hit the headlines after rejecting a new contract at Ibrox (via Daily Mail). And while he is capable of producing the kind of moments of magic that most of the squad have failed to provide this term, he has hardly given supporters much to shout about this season, thus meaning that news of the failed talks was actually met with little fanfare.
However, fans were treated to what the talented winger can do in the Light Blues’ most recent clash as he displayed plenty of composure to score an excellent equaliser in the 2-1 win over Partick.
And Little has urged Caixinha to keep faith with McKay as he proved that he has the potential to be an extremely important player for the Gers.
“Looking at the squad, I would love to see it being built around the players that know all about it and that is Lee Wallace, Barrie, Danny Wilson, Kenny Miller,” he said, as reported by the Evening Times.
“Those are the kind of players I would like to see being built around and Barrie, given his age, is probably the number one.
“He is at a very high level when he is playing as well as we know he can and is arguably Rangers’ biggest asset. I would hope that Pedro got a glimpse of that on Sunday.”
While McKay showed what he can be capable of in the win at the weekend, he arguably needs to produce those moments of magic on a much more regular basis if he hopes to establish himself as the team’s talisman.
And if he proves that he can make game-changing impacts much more often, then not only will Caixinha surely be more willing to give him a much more prominent role, but he may also find that the club will have no hesitation offering him the contract that he is looking for.
