They may be second in the Scottish Premiership table right now, but Rangers wasted their opportunity in the transfer market.
Neil McCann has questioned Rangers decision to sign currently-crocked Croatian Niko Kranjcar from the United States second tier, the Daily Record reports.
Upon their long-awaited return to the top flight this summer, The Gers completed a number of marquee signings in order to close the gap to Old Firm rivals Celtic, with veteran midfielders Kranjcar and Joey Barton (below) both arriving at Ibrox.
However, just a few months into the season, any tentative title hopes have disappeared with Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic 12 points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership table with two games in hand, while it’s fair to say Rangers’ most eye-catching arrivals have not quite had the impact expected of them.
Following a high profile row with team-mate Andy Halliday and manager Mark Warburton in the aftermath of the 5-1 thrashing by Celtic, Barton had his contract cancelled by the club while Kranjcar was ruled out for the majority of the season after suffering ligament damage.
And McCann has questioned the decision to pin hopes upon a 32-year-old player who had featured just seven times in the league below the MLS after being released by Dynamo Kyiv.
“Niko Kranjcar was nowhere near fit when he came from Cosmos,” McCann, who won three SPL titles with Rangers between 1999 and 2003, told the Daily Record.
“He was miles off the pace of the Scottish game. He was just starting to find it then he gets this horrible injury.”
Furthermore, while Moussa Dembele and Scott Sinclair have taken the top flight by storm since arriving at Celtic, many of Rangers’ recent signings, from Philippe Senderos to Joe Garner, have ranged from the forgettable to the disastrous.
