Former Rangers star David Robertson has been awarded the British Empire Medal as part of the Queen’s birthday honours, it has been confirmed.
The ex-Rangers and Leeds defender is awarded the medal for his services to the war-torn Kashmir region, where he has worked as manager of Real Kashmir FC since 2017.
Robertson’s time in Kashmir was documented by the BBC for a documentary as the nine-in-a-row legend looked to make an impression in India.
Little over four years since they were founded, Robertson has won the Indian FA shield and secured their status as a top-flight club in the world’s second-most populated country.
After his award was confirmed overnight, Robertson spoke of his delight at being honoured by the Queen after making massive sacrifices to work in Kashmir, saying: “This award is great for my wife Kym and the family because of the sacrifices we’ve made with me working abroad. I’m absolutely delighted.”
A release by the UK Government website confirmed the details behind Robbo’s recognition as his contribution to the local community in Kashmir is also acknowledged.
“The award recognises Mr Robertson’s outstanding contribution to the sport and the community as head coach of RKFC since January 2017. This included guiding the football team into the I-League – the first time the team has competed at this level. The last season of the I-League saw RKFC attain the highest number of home ground match attendees, averaging 25,000 people per match,”
As well as his wife Kym, Robertson has been joined in India by son, Mason, who plays for Real Kashmir.
With the area one of the most militarised on the planet, Robertson has had to endure rolling blackouts and major fears over the Covid-19 pandemic as India appears to be hit particularly hard.
Alongside Rangers legend Robertson, England duo Raheem Sterling and Jordan Henderson have both been made MBEs in the Queen’s Birthday Honours while Roy Hodgson has been awarded a CBE.
