Former Rangers midfielder Gordon Smith has told The Sunday Post that comparisons between Pedro Caixinha and former Celtic boss Ronny Deila are not yet fair, suggesting that Brendan Rodgers also made a slow start following his arrival in Glasgow.

Caixinha has endured a mixed time since joining the Gers, winning three of his first five games in charge but then losing back-to-back games against the Hoops, including the final Scottish Premiership meeting of the campaign 5-1 at Ibrox.

That may have tempted some Light Blues fans to suggest that the Portuguese perhaps evokes memories of Deila. Although the Norwegian won plenty of silverware while at Parkhead, his tenure will not be remembered particularly fondly and arguably left the door open for the Gers to close the gap significantly – though, under Mark Warburton, they passed up the opportunity.

But Smith has suggested that it is too early to argue that Caixinha’s tenure will follow a similarly underwhelming path to Deila’s.

“No, it is far too early for that one. Remember in the early days of Brendan Rodgers’ charge, Celtic lost in Gibraltar and Israel and were thumped 7-0 by Barcelona in the Nou Camp,” he told The Sunday Post when asked if comparisons were fair.

As Smith suggests, it is surely too soon to judge Caixinha as he is still working with the squad that Warburton put together and subsequently, could not enjoy any notable success with.

Once he has had the summer transfer window, and has been given enough time to bed any new signings in, then that would arguably be the time for the pressure to applied upon Caixinha.
