Ibrox legend Barry Ferguson reveals the difference in his mindset ahead of Sunday’s Old Firm clash.
Ex Rangers captain Barry Ferguson has told the Daily Record he is no longer scared about coming up against Celtic.
The former midfielder, who represented the Gers in over 180 games, claimed that he feared nobody as a player, but the Old Firm derby always worried him since retiring – until Rangers won in late 2018.
Ryan Jack’s 30th-minute goal gave the Gers an all-important victory in December last year, which has given the former skipper a ton of optimism ahead of the weekend’s clash.
Speaking on the Daily Record’s Rangers podcast, Ferguson said: “For the past four or five times I’ve been bricking it when it comes to watching Old Firm games. And the feeling of watching the one on December 29 was good. I saw a different side to Rangers that day. I hadn’t seen that for a long, long time.
“There was a fear from the players when they came up against Celtic – it wasn’t there at Ibrox. I look at Celtic and I don’t fear them. Hopefully, the Rangers players are the same. Yes, they’ve got good players but they haven’t got top, top ones.”
When asked about Rangers’ chances of competing for the title next season, Ferguson said that he believes his former side are getting there and with a few minor changes to the squad, they could mount a real title challenge next season.
Steven Gerrard’s side will be looking to continue their unbeaten run in the second phase of the league and a victory on Sunday will give Hoops fans the bragging rights, at least until next season.
