The on-loan Rangers midfielder could return to Graeme Murty’s side, six months before he’s due back at Ibrox.
Former Rangers manager Pedro Caixinha has warned he could send Carlos Pena back to Ibrox this summer.
Caixinha, who signed Pena for Rangers ahead of the campaign, came back for midfielder in January as boss of new club Cruz Azul.
But things have not gone to plan for Pena in the Mexican capital, where his poor form has seen him booed by his own supporters.
The 28-year-old caused further outrage this week when he was alleged to have been caught buying beer on his way home from training.
And speaking at a press conference this week Caixinha told Marca he’s prepared to terminate Pena’s loan deal six months early, should the Mexican international’s behaviour fail to improve.
“I’m here to change things, and one of those things is discipline,” said the Portuguese. “We want to generate a mentality where players know what it means to be a professional footballer and how one should behave.”
Discussing interventions he could make, Caixinha added: “They range from fines to more extreme decisions, such as contract termination.
“If this type of behavior reoccurs, I’ll say to him ‘Thank you and goodbye’, and we’ll end his contract even though it runs until the end of the year.”
Pena scored five goals in 14 games for Rangers, although his performances did not always deliver – much to the Ibrox faithful’s frustration.
His fellow Mexican, Eduardo Herrera, remains at Rangers – but has yet to make a Premiership appearance this calendar year.
