The former Rangers midfielder Joey Barton has sent a good luck message to Jon Flanagan after the defender’s return to the game five months after leaving Ibrox.
Flanagan, whose spell at Rangers did not coincide with that of Barton, signed an initial one-year deal with Royal Charleroi FC on Wednesday.
The 27-year-old is reported to have been a target for Fleetwood, who are managed by his fellow Liverpudlian and former Burnley teammate.
Nevertheless, Barton – who also shared a warning with Flanagan after his own experience in Marseille – seemed pleased for the latter after his Charleroi unveiling.
Flanagan, who also played with the Rangers manager Steven Gerrard at Liverpool, joins his former England Under-21 teammate Saido Berahino at the Belgian club.
Rangers promoted Nathan Patterson and recruited Calvin Bassey to replace Flanagan as cover for their first-choice full-backs James Tavernier and Borna Barisic.
Bassey, in particular, has impressed when called on at left-back this season.

Barton’s Rangers career comprised just eight appearances – 31 fewer than Flanagan – one suspension and an early termination.
