Former Rangers midfielder Alex Rae has shared his first impression of Pedro Caixinha after interviewing to become the new boss’ number 3 on Thursday.

Caixinha was worn in at Ibrox a fortnight ago, bringing with him a trio of trusted staff members – Helder Baptista, Pedro Malta and Jose Belman.

The Portuguese is keen to add another body to his coaching team, however, one with a strong connection to Rangers.

Barry Ferguson, John Brown and Peter Lovenkrands are also said to be under consideration by Caixinha, with a final decision yet to be made.

And Rae, it seems, has seen nothing to make him want to withdraw from the running.

“Having spent some time in his company he looked as if he was really up for it,” the 47-year-old told the Scottish Sun.

“He’s obviously left a job in Qatar for substantial money to come to Rangers.

“He obviously sees it as an unbelievable opportunity and I think it’s fair too say he’s going to embrace this and go full guns to try and claw the back the gap on Celtic.”

Rae added: “He has an idea on how to play the game. Very Modern.

“He was really impressive, dominant in terms of what he wanted to put across, his ideas and how he sees the job going forward. I was really impressed with him.

“Regardless if it’s myself or someone else, I think it’s important they are trying to get someone Rangers connected to the club. I think it’s a wise move on his part.”

Rae began his playing career in Rangers’ youth ranks, although he did not appear for the Light Blues’ first team until nearly 20 years later, when he returned to Ibrox from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Since retiring from playing in 2010, the Glaswegian has held managerial roles at both Dundee and St Mirren, and was assistant at MK Dons, Notts County, Blackpool and Genk, where he worked under ex-Ibrox chief Alex McLeish.
