Mark Warburton’s Rangers have a long way to go before they can emulate the 2008 Ibrox heroes.

As Steven Davis looks ahead to taking on Hapoel Be’er Sheva in the UEFA Europa League with Southampton tomorrow the Northern Ireland international has been reminiscing about making the final of the competition during his time at Rangers.

Davis was a part of the Rangers side that made it to the UEFA Cup final in Manchester back in 2008.

Rangers were soundly beaten on the day 2-0 by an Andrey Arshavin inspired Zenit but it was clearly an experience that Davis enjoyed.

The former Ibrox hero, who will be hoping Southampton can make their way into the next round of the competition tomorrow night, is quoted by Eurosport as stating:

“I look back on that time very fondly.

“It was a step too far (for Rangers) but a great experience.

“We are in a good position and want to be involved in all competitions after Christmas.”

Rangers fans of course remember that cup run fondly but European nights are a long time coming in the Blue side of Glasgow.

Rangers have been down in the lower leagues after their financial problems but are now back in the Scottish top-flight and are gunning for second place.

If Mark Warburton could bring European nights back to Ibrox for next season then he would be making Rangers fans very happy indeed.
