Martin has been told to find another loan, after spending the second half of last season with Rangers.

Norwich City defender Russell Martin is set to leave on loan once again after Canaries boss Daniel Farke was quoted by the Glasgow Evening Times as saying the former Rangers centre-back will not be given regular football.

The 32-year-old joined Rangers on loan last season, becoming first choice under Graeme Murty and making 17 appearances in all competitions during the second half of the 2017-18 campaign.

However, the defender failed to earn a permanent deal at Ibrox and will be forced to settle with finding a new club ahead of the 2018-19 campaign despite scoring for Rangers against Hearts in a 2-0 win.

German manager Farke explained that Martin is not the kind of player who can play here and there, stating that he needs to leave on loan this summer in order to gain regular first-team football.

“We have this decision to send him on loan and to do without him,” Farke said. “I think it’s the best decision to do it like this because Russell is not a player who can sometimes be in the team and sometimes not.”

Martin, who has earned 29 caps with Scotland, has less than 12 months remaining on his contract at Carrow Road and is likely to leave this time next summer.

It is unlikely that Rangers will be interested in signing Martin after already snubbing the long-serving Norwich man this summer, but with the sale of Bruno Alves and the reported rejected bids for Jake Cooper, Gerrard still requires a centre-back.
