Former Rangers defender Jon Flanagan has been handed a career lifeline after a shambolic stint in Belgium – going on trial with EFL side Doncaster Rovers.

The former Liverpool and Rangers full-back is a free agent after leaving Charleroi, having failed to make a single appearance in Belgium.
Flanagan will now join Tunji Akinola and forwards Dan Gardner and Aidan Barlow in heading to Scotland with Doncaster as they continue their pre-season preparations.
The defender was one of eight trialists to appear for Doncaster in a pre-season rout of non-league side Rossington Main but only four will travel with the squad to Scotland.
“It’s really difficult when you get trialists in and they have a week to impress, play a game and they want a decision straight afterwards,” Doncaster boss Richie Wellens told the Doncaster Free Press.
“I get it because they’re in a position where they want an answer but it’s difficult for us to get a feel.
“No disrespect but we were playing an opposition that are quite inferior to us so sometimes it’s quite difficult to get a gauge.
“We can make a quick decision on some but others might have to just take it and come in for another week as the opposition get more difficult against Spennymoor and Bradford.”
Flanagan’s career has stalled since Rangers exit

After leaving Rangers when his contract ended last summer, Flanagan has struggled to get his career going again – but the chance to sign for Doncaster would be a welcome move for him.
A year in Belgium without kicking a ball will have done him no favours though and it will likely take him some time to get up to speed.
