Stuart McCall spent just three months in charge of Rangers but is well qualified to give his view on the ongoing problems at Ibrox.

Former Rangers manager Stuart McCall believes Alex McLeish’s experience makes him a ‘no-brainer’ for the vacant managerial hotseat at Ibrox, the Daily Record reports.

The Scottish giants are currently embroiled in turmoil after previous incumbent Mark Warburton left the club on Friday and a lack of inspiring alternatives could turn the club towards a recognisable face.

McLeish won two Scottish Premiership titles during his five years at Ibrox but, in the decade since departing, he has done very little to suggest that he deserves a second chance at one of Britain’s most illustrious clubs; although he admitted on Sunday that he would find it difficult to turn Rangers down should they come knocking, according to the BBC.

Nonetheless McCall, who spent three months in interim charge of Rangers as they failed to earn promotion from the second division in 2014/15, believes ‘Big Eck’ is the ideal appointment for a club in crisis.

“Yes I certainly do [think McLeish would be a safe pair of hands]”, the current Bradford City boss said in quotes reported by the Daily Record.

“’Big Eck’ has been there, done it and seen it.

“There’s still so much to play for. They’ve got the quarter final of the Scottish Cup and a home tie and they’ve got to aim to finish second. So they still have their challenges.”

Chairman Dave King has also come under severe scrutiny for failing to provide funds to allow Warburton to challenge Celtic in the club’s first season back in the top flight after four years in the lower leagues.

However, McCall was unwilling to criticise the South African.

“I had one long meeting with him and he was up front and sound,” the 52-year-old added.

“The dealings I had were fine. He is a businessman but obviously has the club at heart so it will be interesting to see where we go from here.”
