Forest have now sacked nine permanent managers in the last six years, but 14 defeats from 25 league matches this season has left the Reds 14th in the table, closer to the relegation zone than they are the playoff places.
Thompson, who played nearly 150 games in six seasons at the City Ground between 2001 and 2007, believes that it was only a matter of time before Warburton’s reluctance to change his style of play caught up with him.
