O’Neill has seen his odds shorten to 3/1 overnight, moving him clear of Paul Simpson, the former Derby winger and 5/1 shot.

However, it is Dean Smith, the Brentford manager, who leads the betting at 5/6.

O’Neill spent a decade at Nottingham Forest, where his trophy haul included two European Cups, two League Cups and the old First Division.

The 66-year-old has since embarked on a successful career in management, winning silverware at Wycome Wanderers, Leicester City and Celtic, and is the current Republic of Ireland boss.

Alex Neil, the Preston North End manager, and Mick McCarthy, the former Ipswich Town boss, are also contenders to take over at Derby, who saw Gary Rowett prised away by Stoke City on Tuesday, with odds of 10/1.
