Former Newcastle United defender Didier Domi has suggested, as quoted by the Chronicle, that Massadio Haidara can establish himself as the club’s first-choice left-back when he returns from injury.

Haidara has not played for the Magpies since picking up a serious injury 11 months ago, and has just 23 league starts to his name in nearly four years at the club.

In his absence, a number of players have tried to hold down the left-back spot with varying success, including Paul Dummett and young star Rolando Aarons.

Dummett has been Rafael Benitez’s go-to man for the position so far this season, playing all but one of the club’s Championship games.

However, Domi, who spent two-and-a-half years at Newcastle from January 1999 to 2001, believes that Haidara has what it takes to usurp the Welsh international when he makes his eventual return.

The Frenchman said of Newcastle’s left-back question, via the Chronicle: “It’s not because I am French but I think it should be Haidara. If he is fit he can do it. He is young, strong and fast. He is intelligent and gets into position, he will be the best choice for left-back.

“Haidara will have no problems, he needs to listen to Rafa and get his progression right. He will be a good full-back.”

Haidara has made 49 appearances in all competitions for Newcastle, but faces a battle to get up to speed again when he returns to training.

The 23-year-old is on his way to completing his rehabilitation after the serious knee problem, but is not expected to be available for some time yet.
