One former Newcastle United manager has opened up about the possibility of taking over EFL Championship side Burnley after Vincent Kompany’s departure.

Under Vincent Kompany, Burnley were promoted to the Premier League but the Belgian’s young and inexperienced side were eventually relegated back down to the second tier of English football.

For the former Manchester City defender, Bavaria is his next destination with Kompany being selected to take over at Bayern Munich following Thomas Tuchel’s departure from the Allianz Arena.

There has certainly been some surprise about Bayern’s decision to hire the Belgian but for Burnley, they will have to appoint a replacement and one surprise name has been mentioned.

One man who has been linked with a role for The Clarets is Alan Pardew, who has been out of work since June 2022, when he was relieved of his duties managing Greek Super League side Aris Thessaloniki.

Now, the former Newcastle United and West Bromwich Albion manager has been linked with a move to Turf Moor and he as responded to these links.

“Well it obviously isn’t me,” he told the White and Jordan show. “Otherwise it would be officially announced!”

However, he didn’t totally shut down the suggestion of a return to management with the Clarets.

“It’s nice to be linked with them, if nothing else,” he said. “I think the squad is good enough, the ownership is well organised and have got finances to – maybe they’re in a better position than Leicester were last year to rebound.

“So I think whoever gets the job, it’s going to be a great opportunity. For myself, it’s a great challenge that I would like to do because I’d like to take a team back to the Prem. I did it, I set teams up to go back to the Prem. West Ham, Southampton. So yeah, I would be open to it.

Pardew not the right man for Burnley

Pardew has not been in a Premier League job since his rather unsuccessful spell at the Hawthorns and Burnley should look elsewhere.

With such a young and exciting squad to choose from, whoever the manager is at the club, they have to be willing to hand these players chances.

As well as this, clubs like Burnley will want a long-term approach to their managerial appointment and Pardew will not be that man for the Lancashire club.
