Newcastle United are expected to be extremely active during the summer transfer window.
Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez
Former Magpies coach Steve Stone spoke to BBC Radio 5 Live last night after Newcastle’s 1-1 draw with Leeds, and explained how Rafa Benitez must strengthen his squad throughout the summer, especially if they gain promotion to the Premier League.
The Toon look to be in good shape to make the jump to the top flight this season, with an eight point advantage over third placed Huddersfield Town, although the Terriers do have a game in hand over them.
Stone was highly critical of the Newcastle squad, however, when speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, and made the suggestion that it could be in their interest to sell one of their star men, to fund moves for players who would increase the quality of the squad as a whole:
“He might even get rid of the likes of Dwight Gayle. Somebody might come and offer £15m, £20m, a team from the Championship, to try and get back up. He might actually be sold to try and better Newcastle. That’s what might happen here. They are going to have to sell to try and get some better players into the team. They definitely need better players. There’s no way they can go up with this team. Defensively they are not good enough. I’ve seen them all season and they do concede goals”
Newcastle United’s Dwight Gayle celebrates
Despite Stone’s criticism of the Newcastle defence, Benitez’ men have actually conceded the second fewest goals in the entire division this term, although hey would undoubtedly have to strengthen if and when they eventually gain promotion to the Premier League.
The Tyneside outfit have endured plenty of ups and downs this season, but a win on Monday against Ipswich Town could all but secure their return to the top flight.
And contrary to Stone’s belief, they will surely want to keep hold of their most clinical striker, as Benitez looks to bring the glory days back to St James’ Park.
