Liverpool produced one of their worst displays of the season against Southampton last night.
Speaking live on Sky Sports’ Premier League Daily at 10:05 am on January 12th, ex-Reds star Dean Saunders offered his opinion on his former side’s loss to Southampton in the EFL Cup semi-final first leg at St Mary’s Stadium last night.
Liverpool have been mightily impressive so far this season, with Jürgen Klopp receiving high acclaim for the manner in which his side have gone about their business.

They were brought back down to earth last night, however, with a lethargic display that was the antithesis of everything that the German stands for.
And when asked if the prospect of Sunday’s clash at Old Trafford could have played a part in their poor performance against the Saints last night, Saunders told Sky Sports’ Premier League Daily:
“Maybe, you do get games and performances like that out of the blue. But maybe it did have an affect on them last night [thinking about the Manchester United game on Sunday], because players do take their eye off of the ball sometimes.”

The Reds must quickly put their disappointing showing behind them though, with their trip to Manchester on the horizon.
United are the league’s in-form side, and are currently in the midst of a nine game winning streak in all competitions.
And Liverpool will have to be at their very best if they expect to take anything back to Merseyside.
