Liverpool legend and youth coach Steven Gerrard is being strongly linked with the vacant managerial role at Rangers.
Gerrard is expected to continue talks with Rangers about replacing Graeme Murty later this week after telling BT Sport he had held ‘positive initial talks’.
Negotiations are to continue between the club and Gerrard’s party which comes in the aftermath of Rangers’ 5-0 defeat to bitter rivals Celtic.
Any potential agreement with the Ibrox club would see Gerrard take over his first senior position as a manager since retiring from the game.
The news has been the talk of football since it came to light last week with all and sundry having their say.
Pundits and fans have been intrigued by the potential appointment given Celtic’s continued dominance and Gerrard’s status as one of the greatest midfield players of his generation.
Many feel it is a cheap attempt by Rangers to raise the club’s profile.
But former Liverpool and Chelsea director Christian Purslow refuted it is a PR stunt and backed Gerrard to be a success with the Gers in an interview with Sky Sports Daily.
“Ten years ago Rangers were in a major European final,” Purslow told Sky Sports Daily.
“The trials and tribulations of that club since then are well documented of a virtual restart from ground zero for the whole club, disappearing from the top table of European football where this once great club proudly sat.
“To associate with a person of the reputation of Steven puts them back on the map.
“Even if they don’t succeed in confirming the appointment I may say and on another tough season and another terrible Old Firm result let’s just hope that wasn’t part of the calculation even being linked with Steven.
“It doesn’t look that way does it and even he himself has confirmed those discussions are ongoing, so this looks like it might be a real story (for Rangers).”
