League One Sunderland look set to announce former Guingamp youngster Abdelkader as their second signing of the summer.
July has started well for Sunderland.
The Black Cats might have failed to sign a prolific number nine so far but at least Jack Ross appears to have solved the club’s right-back problem with Northern Ireland international Conor McLaughlin completing a move to the Stadium of Light on Monday after a disappointing spell with Millwall.
And it looks like Sunderland are about to announce their second signing in the space of just two days.
A little-known goalkeeper by the name of Ahmed Abdelkader has been pictured wearing the new red and white shirt of the League One giants.
If you’ve never heard of Abdelkader, there is a reason why. He is just 20 years of age and is yet to make a senior first-team appearance, having spent much of his short career to date in France with Guingamp’s reserve team.
DZ Football, who have provided the photograph, claimed back in September that Abdelkader failed to earn a contract at Leicester City after a prolonged trial period with the Premier League outfit.
The youthful shot-stopper is expected to form part of Elliot Dickman’s U23 squad when he arrives in the north east of England.
But with Robbin Ruiter, Max Stryjek and Max Johnstone all leaving so far this summer, there may be a chance for Abdelkader to establish himself as the back up to Scotland international Jon McLaughlin instead.
