The Spaniard struggled to cope with the game’s intensity and Chris Wood was left exposed as a result.
Leeds United lost their West Yorkshire clash with Huddersfield Town at the weekend. The Terriers won 2-1 thanks to a late goal from Michael Hefele in a fiery clash between the local promotion rivals.
But despite the side-story regarding the end of game melee the main issue was simply a poor performance from Leeds, compared to what they can produce.
Chris Wood, who scored the goal for Leeds, found himself alone too often throughout the game and that meant that Leeds carried little attacking threat.
Leeds’ Pablo Hernandez shoots from a free-kick
This was certainly the thoughts of one former Leeds player. Former Leeds left-back Ben Parker was speaking to TV Yorkshire when he mentioned this isolation being a cause of Leeds’ problems, and also mentioned the display of Pablo Hernandez:
“Hernandez tried to take too many touches in and around that area. Maybe the game was a little bit too quick for him.
“He got frustrated when the ball didn’t arrive him. You’re going to invite more pressure.
“Again, I feel Wood was a bit isolated again today.
“We seem to struggle when he is isolated.
“He got his goal, but apart from the shot in the second half we didn’t create much. The final ball let us down.”
Leeds’ Pablo Hernandez dejected
Unfortunately that is the nature of the beast with the magical Spaniard.
When he is on form he is unstoppable at this level but his mercurial and often enigmatic playing style means he can find himself bullied out of the tougher games in the Championship.
On this occasion that was the case, as the luxury player struggled to handle the occasion.
