Giuseppe Bellusci has not wasted any time showing Palermo what he’s all about – Leeds United fans know only too well.
If there’s one word you can’t use to describe Giuseppe Bellusci, it’s ‘discipline’. The volatile Italian spent his entire time at Leeds United walking a tightrope and, across two seasons in English football, Bellusci somehow managed to accumulate 25 yellow cards.
The odd booking is hardly a sign of a bad defender. After all, cult hero Pontus Jansson is no stranger to a caution.
Yet, when Bellusci was bookending silly yellows with rash challenges and defending like a four-year-old with a faulty PlayStation controller, it’s fair to say Leeds fans weren’t exactly mourning his departure when he left for Palermo on a permanent basis this summer.
Thomas Christiansen made it immediately clear that the 28-year-old was not part of his plans when he took over at Elland Road in the summer, allowing Bellusci to join Serie B side Palermo on a free transfer.
Four games, first red
And it’s fair to say the former Catania defender, who was booked more times (15) than any other player in Serie A during a loan spell last season, has wasted no time showing his new employers what he is all about.
Just four games into his Palermo career, Bellusci already has his first straight red card for the club, picked up in the dying seconds of Tuesday’s 1-0 victory over Perugia. Not that Bellusci has any regrets, of course.
“I decided to make a bad foul (because Palermo were in danger of a counter attack). I would do it again a hundred times if it was worth winning,” the ‘defender’ told Forza Palermo.
Old habits die hard, it seems.
