Leeds United have exceeded expectations so far this season.
Former Whites boss, and current football ambassador for the club Eddie Gray spoke to LUTV, and highlighted the need for Garry Monk’s men to continue their run of wins, with the teams around them in the table playing to such a high standard this season.
Leeds currently sit in fifth position in the Championship table, but could move to third tonight with a win at Villa Park against 10th placed Aston Villa.
And Gray, who spent two separate spells as Leeds manager, told LUTV how it is vital now for his former club to create a gap between them and whichever team is occupying seventh spot in the table, as they head into the second half of the season:
Former Leeds United player and manager Eddie Gray
“It just goes to show how the league is at the moment. We are still not in a different position in the league, there are two teams above us who have won. That’s why I say that it’s so important to keeping winning these games at this time of the year. And try to open that gap between the seventh team and the teams in the top six.”
Leeds United manager Garry Monk before the match
Monk’s men head into tonight’s game on the back of three straight wins, and should be full of confidence, although their task will by no means be an easy one, with Aston Villa looking more and more like genuine promotion contenders with every week that passes.
The West Yorkshire outfit face a kind looking fixture list over the coming weeks, following their trip to Villa, with home games against Rotherham United and Nottingham Forest on the horizon.
And three points tonight would be the ideal way for them to start the second half of their campaign.
