Leeds United made a surprise decision to cash in on Ronaldo Vieira in the summer.

The Whites earned £6.2 million from the sale, The Guardian reported.

Vieira has had a slow start at new side Sampdoria, only making his first Serie A start earlier this month.

The transfer came as a surprise to the player and he is still adjusting to his new life in Italy.

The England under-20 international told The Times this week that he faces challenges both on and off the pitch.

Vieira said, speaking about the language and his new team: “I know a lot of things on the football side of it. It’s just the speaking, I’ll get there.

“There’s fine margins for little errors. I’d say its more tactical here.”

Vieira added: “I wouldn’t say homesick, but sometimes you get a bit lonely. It’s the life, it’s what it is.”

Sampdoria are in 12th position in Serie A, having won four games out of 12. They are six points clear of the relegation zone.

Leeds sold Vieira after several weeks of pre-season, meaning he was always playing catch up at Sampdoria, and the cultural differences only make the transition more complicated.

As he begins to settle off the pitch, his fortunes on it will become a lot easier.
