HITC Sport understands former Leeds United goalkeeper Alex Cairns is poised to join Chesterfield.
HITC Sport understands former Leeds United goalkeeper Alex Cairns has agreed a deal to join League One Chesterfield.
Cairns is a free agent after being released by Leeds last month when his contract at Elland Road expired.
The 22-year-old had been on the fringes of the Leeds first-team for several years, but was unable to establish himself as the No.1 ‘keeper during his time at the club.
Cairns made just one first-team appearance for Leeds as a substitute in a 5-0 defeat to Blackpool in 2011.
Cairns, who joined Leeds’ academy in 2006, was a regular in the club’s Under-21s and enjoyed loan spells at Barrow and Stalybridge during his time at Elland Road.
A number of clubs have expressed an interest in Cairns, but Chesterfield boss Dean Saunders has moved quickly to line up a deal to bring the shot-stopper to the Proact Stadium.
Cairns will provide cover and competition for No.1 keeper Tommy Lee who signed a new deal at Chesterfield last week.
