Kris Boyd can’t understand what is going on with Rangers’ pursuit of a local coach.
Kilmarnock’s Kris Boyd looks dejected
Former Rangers striker Kris Boyd has told The National that he has no idea what is going on at Ibrox regarding the club’s pursuit of a ‘local’ coach.
The Gers appointed Portuguese boss Pedro Caixinha as their new manager last month, luring him from Qatari side Al-Gharafa as Mark Warburton’s replacement.
Caixinha has recorded a win and a draw in his two games in charge so far, and he has been adding coaches to his backroom staff, with Helder Baptista, Pedro Malta and Jose Belman joining Caixinha at Ibrox.
However, one position on Caixinha’s staff remains open, as he is looking to appoint a ‘local’ coach to help him settle into life at Ibrox and in Scottish football.
History with Rangers appears to be preferable too, as six ex-Gers players – Barry Ferguson, John Brown, Peter Lovenkrands, Alex Rae, Jonatan Johansson and Kevin Thomson – have held talks with the club over the role.
Rangers will be hoping to finalise an appointment following tonight’s game with Kilmarnock, but Killie striker and former Ibrox hero Kris Boyd has admitted he is confused by the pursuit.
New Rangers manager Pedro Caixinha
Speaking to The National, Boyd has admitted that whilst he can understand the pull of working Rangers, he is perplexed at why ‘every player who used to play for Rangers’ is in contention for the job.
Boyd added that he wonders whether Rangers are forcing Caixinha to make such a move, and he isn’t sure what is going on at his former club having failed to make an appointment despite weeks of talks.
“I can understand the pull of it but it seems every player who used to play for Rangers has been linked with the job,” said Boyd. “For me, I don’t know if it’s something he [Caixinha] wants to do or if it’s been forced upon him. When you see there’s been a list of candidates drawn up and you still can’t get one after four or five weeks, I don’t know what’s going on,” he added.
