Former Rangers striker John MacDonald has told the Glasgow Evening Times that he thinks the Gers have needed a player like Alfredo Morelos for some time.

The Gers underwent a full-scale overhaul of their squad over the summer, as manager Pedro Caixinha brought in a total of 11 new signings, with the likes of Bruno Alves and Graham Dorrans grabbing the headlines as key additions.

Rangers did though need to bring in attacking reinforcements, with Joe Garner, Martyn Waghorn, Michael O’Halloran and Joe Dodoo all allowed to leave over the course of the summer transfer window.

Despite some struggles in front of goal this season, Rangers do appear to have found a penalty box predator, having landed Alfredo Morelos from Finnish side HJK Helsinki this summer.

The Colombian hitman starred in Finland with 46 goals in 62 games, and he has got off to a fantastic start with Rangers, finding the net five times in his seven appearances to immediately become an Ibrox hero.

Morelos is just 21, but is already showing that he can be Rangers’ leading goalscorer this season, and he also has the potential to become even better over the course of his time at Ibrox.

Fans have already taken to Morelos in the first month of the season, and one former Rangers player has offered his thoughts on the latest Ibrox goalscoring sensation.

Former Rangers forward John MacDonald has told the Glasgow Evening Times that he has been impressed with Morelos’ ability to hold the ball up and get in the right areas to score, claiming that he is exactly what Rangers have been needing in the final third – and the youngster much continue his fine form over the course of the campaign.

“You want to start your career at a club by scoring goals and he has got a couple already. That will have given him a bit of confidence and you can see him building on that,” said MacDonald. “He is really good at holding the ball up. He is only a wee guy but he is strong and he has shown he can be a threat in the air as well. I have been really impressed with him. You hear people saying that he hasn’t played anybody yet, but you can only score against the teams that are put in front of you and if he keeps up his form then he can score against anyone in the league.”

“He wants to score goals and any opportunities that he gets it looks as though there is a good chance he will put them away. He is really lively up there, he gets in about defenders and doesn’t give them peace. The last thing defenders want is someone that keeps on at them all the time. His work rate is great and it is nice to see him get his rewards for that by scoring a couple of goals. Rangers have been needing a goal scorer like him. It has been a great start for him and hopefully he can carry it on and get 30 goals this season,” he added.
