Tottenham Hotspur have begun their campaign in impressive fashion, despite Holland international Vincent Janssen struggling to establish himself as yet.

Former Holland international Willem van Hanegem was highly critical of Spurs striker Vincent Janssen when writing his column for Dutch sports outlet AD.

The 22-year-old striker was instrumental for his country during their World Cup Qualifying 4-1 win on Friday over Belarus, but Van Hanegem was not impressed.

Writing his column for AD, the former Feyenoord and Holland star described how Janssen’s struggles at White Hart Lane have led to him becoming a selfish player when representing his country:

“He was specifically looking for his own success because he does not play and therefore does not score at Tottenham Hotspur. Which I thought was at one point was even annoying. I think he’s better when he plays less for himself. The very fact that he is a team player, makes him usable for Holland.”

It must be a particularly frustrating time for Janssen, with his initial struggles to settle in quickly at White Hart Lane being compounded by his failure to establish himself as Tottenham’s number one striker during Harry Kane’s prolonged absence.

He was even omitted form Mauricio Pochettino’s starting XI for Tottenham’s crucial Premier League game against Manchester City last weekend, and he will now find it even more difficult to force his way back into the side after their resounding 2-0 win.

Upon his arrival in London, much was expected of the former AZ Alkmaar man, after his superb return of 27 goals in 34 Eredivisie outings last term.

As expected, however, the Premier League has proved to be a huge step up in both quality and intensity, and whether Janssen has the determination and talent to meet those standards remains to be seen.
