West Ham United defeated Chelsea in the EFL Cup yesterday evening to book themselves a place in the quarter-finals of the competition – where they will face Manchester United.

West Ham played well for their win with goals from Cheikhou Kouyate and Edimilson Fernandes proving enough to earn them the three points.

It was a good performance and result for the Hammers but one former Hammer believes they should not read too much into the result.

David James spent three years at Upton Park before joining Manchester City in 2004. He was speaking on Channel 5’s EFL Cup goals show last night (26/10/16) when he stated his belief that the win against a weakened Chelsea side should not become a red herring:

“Arguably yes (this is the best West Ham have played this season) but, especially in the first-half, they were playing against what you would consider a weakened Chelsea side.

“The header from Kouyate was wonderful. Asmir Begovic has no chance whatsoever.

“I think for West Ham they have to say ‘look, we are through to the next round, let’s not get carried away with the result, but let’s take it as a good win’ but there is still room for improvement.”

West Ham have struggled to get going this season but this most recent result was certainly a big boost to the club’s morale. The idea of a quarter-final clash with Manchester United will also fill Hammers fans with excitement.

But next up for West Ham is a clash with Everton on Sunday and they may have to up their game once again.
