Former Everton striker Kevin Campbell is a fan of Diego Simeone.
Kevin Campbell has admitted on Twitter that he likes the idea of Diego Simeone replacing Sam Allardyce at Everton – but questioned whether he’d leave Atletico Madrid for the Toffees.
Allardyce was named as Ronald Koeman’s successor at Goodison Park at the end of November but it remains to be seen who Everton’s long-term manager will be after the veteran was only handed an 18-month deal.
Given their outlay is in excess of £200 million over the past six months, the Merseyside club will have designs on Champions League qualification next season and if the 63-year-old is nowhere near to delivering that then a change of manager wouldn’t be unthinkable.
When it was put to the former Everton striker that Simeone would take the Toffees to the next level, Campbell admitted that he liked the Argentine coach but is unsure whether he’d quit the Spanish giants for life on Merseyside.
Allardyce’s qualities are plain to see and Everton have undoubtedly improved, but is he anything more than a mid-table manager? Is he going to lead them into the Champions League by the 2019-20 campaign?
It’s unlikely and with that in mind, if Simeone was available then Farhad Moshiri should do everything in his power to get him.
He would take Everton to the next level and get the very best out of what is a very decent squad of players. Allardyce is the man to stave off the threat of relegation, but he probably isn’t the man to usher in the new and exciting era that fans are desperate for.
