Two of Tottenham Hotspur’s key men fail to feature in Carlton Palmer’s ideal England eleven.

Carlton Palmer has named his ideal England starting eleven for this summer’s European Championship, and it features two glaring omissions.

Speaking to Talksport on Friday, the former Three Lions midfielder, who won 18 caps between 1992 and 1993, said he fears Roy Hodgson will take a cautious approach to the tournament, which could be his last as head coach.

“I know what Roy Hodgson will do because he is a safe bet man; and what we don’t want is a safe bet,” Palmer told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show.

“We want to really have a go at this European Championship.”

And Palmer says that if he was in charge, he would adopt a four-three-three system, with Jamie Vardy leading the line ahead of Premier League golden boot winner Harry Kane and Wayne Rooney in central midfield, in place of Kane’s Tottenham teammate Dele Alli.

“That is how I would line up @SportsBreakfast. You can alter the personnel but that would be the system,” the 50-year-old posted on Twitter.

Kane has scored 25 league goals this season, one more than Leicester City star Vardy, and both players were on target in England’s 2-1 friendly win against Turkey on Sunday.

Alli, meanwhile, registered more goals and assists combined than any other English midfielder in what was his debut top-flight season, having previously played third tier football for Milton Keynes Dons.
