Celtic legend David Provan has dismissed Rangers striker Jermain Defoe’s recent assertion that Steven Gerrard’s side can catch Celtic, as quoted in The Scottish Sun.

Rangers striker Defoe has told Football FanCast that it is only a matter of time before the Gers catch their bitter Old Firm rivals Celtic.

Defoe recently told Football Fancast “I said it when I signed, I believe it’s only a matter of time before it happens.

“Celtic fans give me a bit of banter about it on social media but I do genuinely believe it’s only a matter of time.”

Former Celtic winger Provan has laughed off Defoe’s comments, and believes that Rangers need to match the Hoops for bottle to win the title.

Provan wrote in The Scottish Sun: “I’ll have a pint of whatever Jermain Defoe’s drinking.

“Asked when Rangers will win the league, the striker says: ‘I do genuinely believe it’s only a matter of time. The club has everything it needs to be successful, even down to the food we’re eating at the training ground.’

“Sorry, but Gers had their chance this season and couldn’t walk the walk. Until they match Celtic for bottle, it’ll be more humble pie.”

Improvement needed

Celtic are 13 points clear of second-placed and bitter Old Firm rivals Rangers at the top of the Scottish Premiership table at the moment.

Although the Gers have a game in hand, it is hard to see the Hoops collapse if the season is to resume.

According to Sky Sports, the Scottish Premiership will be called off this week due to the global health crisis, with the Hoops crowned champions.

Rangers need to add consistency to their game, and must also improve their record in the league away from home.
