Kris Commons believes Rangers cannot compete with Celtic for this year’s title.

Rangers held Celtic to a draw in their recent Old Firm fixture and enter 2018 with hopes of catching Brendan Rodgers’ side.

Graeme Murty’s Rangers are 11 points behind Celtic and face a tough prospect to overhaul the reigning champions, but have been busy in the transfer market.

Rangers have loaned in Jamie Murphy, Sean Goss, Russell Martin and Jason Cummings, and hope all four will make a big impact.

Former Celtic attacker Kris Commons believes they have recruited well – but feels the very best Rangers can hope for is second place.

He told The Mail: “Their recruitment has been encouraging and the race for second place is going to be interesting.

“Aberdeen will fancy themselves to maintain their place as the best of the rest but Rangers will be hopeful of a stronger second half of the season.”

Finishing second would be slight progress for Rangers after they finished third last season, and currently they sit behind the Dons.

Yet this is not Rangers’ ambition, with new signing Russell Martin telling the Daily Record they want to get as close to Celtic as possible.

The first step will be seeing off Aberdeen this week if they can, when Derek McInnes’s side come to Ibrox.

A win for Rangers will be seen as a significant step and can set them up to try and chase Celtic down.

Losing would put them further behind the curve, and make finishing second the best case scenario.
