Former Celtic central defender Erik Sviatchenko has told The Scottish Sun that it will not be easy for his FC Midtjylland side to win against Steven Gerrard’s Glasgow Rangers.

Rangers will take on Midtjylland in the Europa League third qualifying round.

The first leg of the tie will be held in Denmark, while the second leg will be played at Ibrox in Glasgow.

Sviatchenko knows all about Rangers from his time at Celtic, and the 27-year-old Denmark international central defender is aware that winning against the Gers over two legs will not be easy.

Sviatchenko told The Scottish Sun: “I think our chance of going through is 50/50, but it will be insanely difficult.

“It’s going to be two exciting ties – Rangers will come to Denmark with a lot of fans and they have a really strong team.

“I had the pleasure of playing against them five times while at Celtic. Rangers are physical and fast.”

Celtic spell

Sviatchenko joined Celtic from Midtjylland in January 2016 for a transfer fee reported by BBC Sport to be worth £1.5 million.

The Denmark international did well initially, but the central defender lost his place in the team under then manager Brendan Rodgers, who is now in charge of Leicester City in the Premier League.

After a loan spell back at his former club Midtjylland in 2018, the 27-year-old made the move permanent at the Danish outfit in the summer of 2018 for a transfer fee reported by The Daily Record to be worth £1m.

Sviatchenko is still very popular among the Celtic fans, who have urged the defender on a number of occasions to return to Celtic Park, as reported on HITC Sport here, here and here.
