Leeds United signed teenager Tyler Roberts on deadline day – but is he good enough to force Pierre-Michel Lasogga out of the starting line-up straight away?
Interestingly, he may not need to.
While Roberts is a striker – he is also capable of playing out wide.
He did so in his final game of his loan spell for Walsall, and earned praise from manager Jon Whitney.
Whitney told the Express and Star last month after Roberts featured on the left wing: “I felt some of what he did in our defensive third in the first half is a credit to Tyler. That shows how far he has come on.
“It shows how he has progressed. He understands that you have to put it in for the team and if you do that you will get chances.
“I think he will push on now and become a really important player in the second half of the season – that is why I would love to keep him if I can.”
Roberts’ loan spell then came to an end, and a transfer battle ensued which ended up with the forward signing with Leeds on deadline day.
His versatility gives him a real chance of getting more games for the Whites and his loan spell at Walsall has been crucial for him.
The 19-year-old needs to play regularly in order to continue developing and while it would be preferable to see him up front, manager Thomas Christiansen at least has options.
