Southampton signed Oriol Romeu in the summer of 2015 for a fee believed to be in the region of £5 million.

Former Barcelona first-team coach Pedro Abraham shared how current Southampton star Oriol Romeu was once seen as the heir to Sergio Busquets at the Nou Camp, when speaking to Sky Sports.

The Spaniard has been in superb form for the Saints this season, appearing in every single one of their nine Premier League games thus far.

Abraham was speaking to Sky Sports, and highlighted how highly regarded he was by the Catalans when he was part of the Barca setup before his move to Chelsea in 2011:

“He’s not Iniesta or Xavi; he is more physical than your typical Barcelona player, but for me he has a similar profile to Busquets. He is a bit stronger and not as technical, but he would have fought for that position – he gives a lot of balance to the team.”

Claude Puel certainly seems to have built a very strong Saints side since he moved to St Mary’s in the summer, and Romeu is proving himself to be a pivotal part of that side.

With the amount of attacking talent present in Puel’s side, the Spaniard’s role in Southampton’s team is vital to how they go about their work.

Whilst he does not receive the praise that some of Southampton’s forward players do, he is equally important to their chances of success this term.

Next up for Puel’s men is a visit from Romeu’s old club Chelsea on Sunday.
