Leeds United and Aston Villa recorded a drama-filled drama over the weekend.
Former Aston Villa striker Garry Thompson has claimed that Leeds don’t have ‘too many goals in them’ ahead of a potential playoff final clash at Wembley.
Over the weekend, both teams played out a fiery and controversial 1-1 draw at Elland Road, with Marcelo Bielsa allowing the away team to score an uncontested goal.
Speaking to BBC Radio West Midlands Football Phone-In (30/04/2019), Thompson isn’t worried about Villa potentially meeting Leeds in the final because they don’t have enough firepower.
“It would be a good game again,” Thompson told BBC Radio WM. “Not at all [worried about them]. I look at the Leeds side the other day, I don’t think they have too many goals in them. I fancy us to beat them.”
Not scoring enough goals or seeing off opposition is something Leeds have struggled with this season. There is no doubt that it has been a problem for them throughout the campaign.
There have been many occasions, particularly at home, where the stats would tell one story of the Whites’ dominance, but the scoreline would tell something else.
Kemar Roofe and Patrick Bamford have been their main goal threat, but both have suffered injuries throughout the campaign. Added with that, playmaker Pablo Hernandez has also chipped in, but others seemingly haven’t impacted the final third as much.
Saying that, Bielsa’s side are one game away from giving a team a hiding and it won’t be a surprise if they leave to the last moment. And if they do then it’ll only increase their chances of earning promotion to the Premier League.
West Brom, Villa, and at this moment in time, Derby County fill those play-off places. But the latter could change on the final day of the season because they still haven’t secured their top-six status.
