Former Arsenal player and manager, Terry Neill, thinks that Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers would be a good choice as Arsene Wenger’s successor.
Wenger’s current contract with the North London club expires in 2019 but there are many, such as ex-Gunner Charlie Nicholas who said as much to Sky Sports, that thinks the Frenchman should leave this summer.
Pressure has been mounting on the 68-year-old for a number of years, especially after he failed to guide the team to the Champions League last term for the first time since he was first appointed back in 1996.
They once again look unlikely to qualify for Europe’s top club competition this time around, currently sitting sixth in the table and 13 points off fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur.
And when Wenger finally does exit his post at the Emirates Stadium, Neill believes that Rodgers could be the man to take over in the position.
“I can understand why Brendan has been linked to the Arsenal job because he has done a smashing job at Celtic,” the 75-year-old told the Daily Record.
“Rodgers has many qualities and has ticked most of the boxes in terms of his managerial abilities.
“He’s had big English Premier League experience from his time with Liverpool. It was a mixed time for him there but it was great experience for him.
“There is a lot to be considered. He is a hero at Celtic so he would have to ask why destroy that?
“He has obviously got ambition, so don’t deny yourself your ambition but it would be a tough call for Brendan whoever came in for him – be that Arsenal or another big Premier League team. He would have to think about the state of affairs he has at present and how successful he is at Celtic.”
Would Rodgers be tempted?
The Northern Irishman has made no secret of the fact that he would like to manage in the top flight of English football again one day, having come so close to winning the title with the Reds back in 2013/14.
Despite their recent struggles Arsenal do have a rich history in the division and the finances to break back into the top four and even push for top spot themselves.
Simply put, yes Rodgers would be tempted.
