Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is under heavy pressure with his side 16 points adrift of league leaders Chelsea.
William Gallas during his Arsenal days
Former Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham star William Gallas spoke live on Soccer AM on Saturday March 11th at 10:21 am, and discussed the major difference between Jose Mourinho and Arsene Wenger.
The two managers are notorious for their differing views on how the game should be played, with the Portuguese prioritising substance over style, whilst the Frenchman has always been steadfast in his belief that entertaining the fans is paramount.
And it is quite clear which approach has yielded the most success.
Since Mourinho took over as manager of Chelsea in 2004, he has won 14 major honours, including three Premier League titles with the Blues and a Champions League trophy with Inter Milan in 2010.
Wenger, on the other hand, has won just three FA Cups during that period.
And Gallas, who made 261 Premier League appearances combined for both Chelsea and Arsenal, highlighted a potential reason why the Portuguese has won so much more than the Gunners boss in the last 13 years, when speaking to Soccer AM, responding to a question asking what was the main difference between the two coaches:
Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho and Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger
“With Jose, he will show you everyday at training (how much he wants to win). If you’re not 100 per cent he will stop the training and he will say, ‘What’s wrong with you? If you don’t want to train just go outside and run, because what I expect from you is to give me everything’. And with Arsene it’s a little bit different, you have more responsibility to manage yourself, so he won’t be behind you all the time.”
And with Mourinho’s Manchester United side just one point behind Arsenal in the Premier League table, it would not be a surprise to anybody to see him have the last laugh over Wenger once again this season, by pipping the Gunners into fourth spot in the table.
