Arie van Os says if there is no agreement with Tottenham, defender must play in tonight’s game.

Former Ajax director Arie van Os has urged the club to get tough with defender Davinson Sanchez.

Sanchez missed the club’s game with Heracles at the weekend as he was distracted with transfer links to Tottenham Hotspur.

Dutch website Telegraaf report Sanchez has agreed personal terms with Spurs, but that the two clubs are a long way away from settling on a fee.

Ajax have a Europa League qualifying match at home to Rosenborg this evening and after training with the first team again yesterday, Sanchez is under consideration for selection.

Van Os told Telegraaf that it is essential that Ajax play Sanchez, and take no notice if he says he is not feeling right.

He said: “Just put that guy on Thursday against Rosenborg if there is no final agreement. You’re not going to ask if anyone is mentally able to play football?

“You are entering the field. Fact. You can differ as an employee and employer, but you do not let your club and fellow players down.

“And if you want to throw down your cap, you’re shame for 50 thousand spectators. See if the big clubs then still want Mr Sanchez.”

Tottenham would be watching through closed fingers if Sanchez did play, hoping he would not suffer an injury, while the centre-back may be similarly concerned.

Ajax though struggled without him at the weekend, and with their Europa League future resting on a good first leg of this qualifier, they cannot afford to gamble.

They will have to decide whether it is more of a gamble to pick Sanchez, or not to.
