Former super-agent Jon Smith has said that Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal should not have signed Kai Havertz from Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea in the summer transfer window.

Jon Smith, who was an agent to Argentine legend Diego Maradona among others, does not think that Arsenal should have spent the kind of money they did on Kai Havertz.

Havertz, who can operate as a forward or as an attacking midfielder, moved to Arsenal from London and Premier League rivals Chelsea in the summer of 2023.

According to Sky Sports, the Gunners paid £65 million in transfer fees for the 24-year-old.

Arsenal told about transfer mistake with Kai Havertz

Smith wrote in CaughtOffside: “I watched the Arsenal game and I think their buys have been fantastic – although I’m not sure why they bought Kai Havertz.

“It’s only a personal view but why would you pay £65m for an off the bench player? That’s just my opinion.”

We do not think that Arsenal should have spent £65 million on Kai Havertz.

That was too much money.

Yes, Havertz is 24 now and has a lot of potential, but he could not do a great deal at Chelsea on a consistent basis.

That the Blues were willing to sell Havertz said a lot.

Although the Germany international has started all four of Arsenal’s Premier League matches so far this season, he has not played particularly well.

It seems that Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is trying too hard to fit in Havertz.

Havertz has made 95 appearances in the Premier League so far in his career.

The attacker has scored 19 goals and given seven assists in those matches.
