Gareth McAuley could soon be ready to feature for Rangers.

Gareth McAuley was Rangers’ final signing of a busy summer, brought in as a free agent after the transfer window closed.

Fitness problems have prevented him from featuring for the first team and Joe Worrall has been the new signing to break up the promising Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic partnership.

The Northern Ireland international is a huge Rangers fan and is keen to make an impact. He might be getting close.

He was a participant in full training earlier this week, the Daily Record reported.

On Monday he featured for Rangers reserves as a starter in a 3-0 victory over Aberdeen in which young forward Andy Dallas netted twice.

It was a comfortable game for the veteran and just what he needed to prove his fitness.

Rangers’ centre-back situation is a little confusing at present, with Joe Worrall displacing Nikola Katic over the past month.

Katic needs to be brought back in really, but McAuley will cloud the picture for Rangers boss Steven Gerrard.

McAuley is 38 and only has a limited time in which to prove himself and ideally Rangers would like to start using him soon.

Over the next month the centre-back may start making an impact, and it is likely to be a big positive for the Gers.
