The performance of McGugan, who hasn’t played for Sheffield Wednesday since May 2016, was overshadowed by that of Crystal Palace trialist Berkeley-Agyepong.

Lewis McGugan made a rare appearance for Sheffield Wednesday’s Under-23s on Monday afternoon.

The midfielder, who was transfer listed and stripped of his squad number last summer, played around 60 minutes of the Owls’ 1-1 draw against Cardiff City at Hillsborough.

McGugan hasn’t played for Wednesday’s first team since the final day of last season, although his services could be required by head coach Carlos Carvalhal ahead of Saturday’s trip to Barnsley.

The Portuguese is already without Kieran Lee to a hip problem, while Almen Abdi and Sam Hutchinson may also be unavailable.

Winger Jacob Berkeley-Agyepong scored Wednesday’s only goal against the Bluebirds, having linked up with the Yorkshire side from Crystal Palace on a trial basis.

Berkeley-Agyepong, who began his career at left-back, scored a hat-trick for Palace on a previous visit to Hillsborough in December 2013.

The 19-year-old is not the first trialist to feature for Wednesday’s Under-23s in recent weeks, with Everton’s Michael Donohue appearing in the recent wins against Hull City and Queens Park Rangers.

Should Carvalhal recall McGugan against Barnsley?
