Forget Fernando Torres’ Manchester United effort – is this the worst miss ever?

The Spaniard made Premier League headlines after his clanger for Chelsea against the Red Devils but a player in Switzerland may have gone one better.

Fernando Torres may be back among the goals for Atletico Madrid this week, but to Manchester United fans he will always be remembered for THAT miss.

Coming in a Premier League clash between a Chelsea side managed by Andre Villas-Boas and the Red Devils, the Spaniard’s open goal blunder remains the stuff of legend.

Put through on the United goal, Torres rounded David De Gea with ease and had the goal at his mercy.

Yet somehow the former Liverpool favourite, who was evidently short on confidence, contrived to miss the chance with the Red Devils going on to win 3-1.

Fast-forward just over four years, however, and while the World Cup winner appears to be regaining some of the form that made him so popular at Anfield, one player in Switzerland appears to be keen on emulating his world-famous miss.

The incident occurred during a Swiss Super League clash between Young Boys and Aarau that ended 2-2 on the night.

It could have be very different, however, if one Young Boys player had converted a seemingly simple chance.

The culprit in question was Argentine striker Gonzalo Zarate – not to be confused with QPR’s on-loan forward Mauro Zarate.

With the open goal in front of him, the 30-year-old somehow managed to hit the post.

His terrible effort was then further compounded when teammate Renato Steffen hit the bar with the follow-up.

Torres may be responsible for one of the Premier League’s worst ever misses, but Zarate’s may just trump the Spaniard’s effort when it comes to the continent.
