Celtic have tracked Dundee ‘keeper Scott Bain for two years – but Killie shot-stopper Jamie MacDonald is far more reliable.
Celtic’s two first-choice goalkeepers have a combined age of 70. Craig Gordon cannot go on forever despite his undoubted improvements since Brendan Rodgers took over at Parkhead in 2017.
The seldom-seen Dorus de Vries, meanwhile, appears to be heading into his final few months as a Celtic player with the veteran ‘keeper’s contract due to expire at the end of the 2017/18 season. Rodgers, then, must give some thought to identifying a goalkeeper capable of competing with, or even replacing, long-serving number one Gordon over the next few years.
With Dundee’s highly-rated number one Scott Bain set to be a free agent too by the time the summer of 2018 rolls around, expected the uncapped Scot to once again be linked with a move to the Champions.
The Daily Record reported as recently as February that Celtic were still tracking a ‘keeper who has been in their sights since as far back as 2015.
Though there is another highly-talented shot-stopper in Scotland’s top flight who should also be on Celtic’s radar. Kilmarnock goalkeeper Jamie MacDonald has been one of the most quietly consistent goalkeepers in the Premiership since joining from Falkirk in 2015.
And while Bain tends to swing from the sensational to the catastrophic, MacDonald is arguably far more reliable – and therefore far more befitting of a club of the expectations of Celtic.
MacDonald has been in brilliant form for Killie so far this season and already has a number of Save of the Season contenders to his name. With Celtic needing to plan for life after Gordon and De Vries, the 31-year-old has surely done enough to put himself in the frame.
