Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with yet another young Ligue 1 winger, but they have their own sensational prospect waiting in the wings.

Those Tottenham Hotspur fans hoping the club had learned from the ill-fated moves for Clinton N’Jie and Georges-Kevin N’Koudou may not be too pleased to read a recent report from TF1, linking Mauricio Pochettino’s side with Allan Saint-Maximin.

The 20-year-old is arguably even more of a work in progress than N’Jie or N’Koudou, and while Tottenham should be focusing on signing a far more experienced and proven winger, they should also be looking a little closer to home rather than risking more disappointment on rough diamonds who struggle to shine.

After all, Marcus Edwards will be hoping to step out of the shadows next season after injury robbed him of the chance to do so last time round, and rather than signing young wingers who are going to take time to settle in England, Tottenham should focus instead on blooding the 18-year-old while also signing a more experienced alternative for the big games ahead.

Predominantly a right winger, although able to operate as an attacking midfielder if required, Edwards is the jewel in Tottenham’s academy crown, and he deserves the chances that were once afforded to N’Jie and N’Koudou and could be given to Saint-Maximin if the latest rumours are true.

None of those players were, are or could be regular starters from the outset, and neither would Edwards, but every minute on the field will help his development and it is time Pochettino gave the teenager the chance to shine.

Edwards it the real deal, and if he starts to build up his game time next season, by the time he is 20 he could be every bit as important to Tottenham as some of their current young stars.
