Tottenham faced Sporting in the Champions League last week, and one opposition player made all of the headlines before and after the game.

Indeed, Marcus Edwards was the centre of attention before the game due to his ties to Tottenham having left Spurs as a young player in search of gametime – landing back in the Champions League with Sporting.

Edwards put on a serious show against his former club, almost scoring one of the goals of the season after a slaloming run, and he caused Spurs’ defence all sorts of problems on the day.

Inevitably, after the game, Spurs fans were calling for Edwards to be re-signed and bemoaning Daniel Levy for ever letting him go.

We can understand that sentiment to some extent. After all, Edwards looked brilliant last week, but, in our view, Edwards isn’t a player worth losing sleep over. In fact, it’s easy to argue that Spurs already have a young player in his position who is way better.

Of course, we’re talking about Dejan Kulusevski.

It’s easy to forget because he plays with so much maturity, but Kulusevski is actually 18 months younger than Edwards, and he’s infinitely more proven at the top level.

Yes, Edwards has been shining in Portugal, but Kulusevski has been putting up comparable numbers in a much better league.

Edwards’ style of play may be more eye-catching and flashy, but at the end of the day, goals win games and Kulusevski provides more of a threat in the attacking third.

The Sporting star could well have been a good player for Tottenham, but with Kulusevski already at Spurs, we have to wonder whether or not he’d even get a game if he was still in north London.

Should Spurs have handled Edwards better? Of course they should have, he’s now worth so much more than Spurs received for him, but given how good Kulusevski is at a younger age, Tottenham shouldn’t be too cut up about this one.
