Forget Jorgensen, Newcastle should sign Feyenoord teammate Berghuis

Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing Feyenoord striker Nicolai Jorgensen.

Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing Feyenoord target man Nicolai Jorgensen as Rafa Benitez looks to finally conduct his work in the January transfer market towards the latter stages of the month.

Jorgensen, 27, is a target for the Toon after the powerful striker has struck nine goals in 19 league and cup appearances for the Dutch giants this season, turning provider on a further three occasions too.

Sky Sports have claimed that Feyenoord have rejected a bid from Benitez’s side, with the club looking to rake in more than £20million for the 28-time Denmark international – a fee which may be out of the Toon’s price range.

But surely such a figure would be wasted on a player that failed to impress when he moved to a top European league in the form of the German Bundesliga? Featuring in 21 matches for Bayer Leverkusen, he failed to score.

Jorgensen has since starred for Feyenoord after first earning a move to Germany when following an impressive stint in the top tier of Danish football with FC Copenhagen, but at more than £20million, he is too much of a risk to take.

However, Newcastle should keep their aim solely focused on Feyenoord and instead target his attacking teammate Steven Berghuis, who continues to tear up the Dutch Eredivisie from the right flank.

The 26-year-old has shone for Feyenoord this season, scoring 15 goals and adding a further seven assists in just 26 matches and it is that kind of eye for goal and creation in the final third that Newcastle are crying out for.

11-time Netherlands international Berghuis can play on either flank but prefers the right, and would certainly be a huge improvement on Matt Ritchie. If Feyenoord are willing to do business at a similar price for Jorgensen, then Berghuis is a must.

Signing Berghuis and a prolific, proven Premier League goalscorer could be the difference between relegation and safety.
