Leeds United were linked with Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle in the summer, and have more recently been linked with Liverpool’s Danny Ings.
ESPN recently reported that Leeds were interested in a January bid for Liverpool striker Danny Ings as they looked to strengthen their chances of securing promotion out of the Championship after their promising start to the season.
Ings has been plagued by injury since arriving at Anfield and has more recently struggled to break into Jurgen Klopp’s plans. So while he may be an excellent addition to the Whites squad if they are able to bring him to Elland Road during the winter, there is surely an element of risk involved.
So perhaps Thomas Christiansen should consider turning to a striker who Leeds made an enquiry for during the summer window as it is surely a safer bet that he would perform in the Championship if he was to join.
Gayle has also struggled for opportunities this season, with Rafa Benitez only handing him two Premier League starts and four substitute appearances, but his form last season suggests that he would be a brilliant signing for the Yorkshire outfit.
Only Chris Wood scored more than the 23 goals that Gayle bagged in the second tier last term, and he did that in just 32 appearances, including just 26 starts.
Of course, his asking price would have to drop significantly for a permanent deal to be a possible option for Leeds, but perhaps a loan move may appeal to all parties if Newcastle do manage to get another striker through the door.
And if Leeds could land Gayle on loan, their promotion hopes would surely receive a major boost – and for that reason, the Whites simply have to get back in contact with the Magpies when the window opens.
