Newcastle United lost 1-0 to Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday evening, and manager Rafael Benitez looks set to see his campaign come to a disappointing end.

After four wins in a row, the Magpies have now lost four in a row, and with Harry Kane’s second half goal condemning Newcastle to defeat at Wembley Stadium.

Benitez will be keen to boost his squad this summer after a dip in form, and reports from the Daily Mail earlier this week suggested that Newcastle are set to launch a £15million swoop for West Bromwich Albion’s Craig Dawson.

There is little doubting that Dawson, 28, has been a steady performer for the Baggies despite their relegation to the Championship, and Newcastle could pounce to offer him an instant Premier League return.

However, £15million would be close to Newcastle’s transfer record, and they should instead be looking to complete the bargain signing of the summer by securing Dawson’s West Brom teammate Jonny Evans for just £3million.

The Mirror recently reported that Newcastle wanted to land Evans, who has a £3million release clause in his deal upon relegation to the Championship, making him an appealing prospect to any Premier League club.

Evans, 30, provides major experience as a centre back and has three Premier League titles to his name, and would bring even further defensive stability in the heart of Benitez’s back line alongside Florian Lejeune and Jamaal Lascelles, providing an excellent reading of the game alongside two more athletically gifted centre backs.

Dawson may bring added versatility given that he can play at right back, but Evans is just two years older and comes at a fifth of the price – and rather than overpay for Dawson, they should be looking to strike one of the deals of the summer by landing teammate Evans instead.
